"I had been to London quite a few times and really enjoyed it, but Mum hated the place. She only took me twice that I could remember, once for Christmas shopping in Oxford Street and once to see a show with tickets won in a competition in the local paper. "I loved London and still do. It is a vibrant and exotic city, so different from anywhere else I know, and it never sleeps. It is a city of contrasts with the ultra-rich and the destitute living side-by-side, elegant public buildings and ostentatious private properties lying almost cheek-by-jowl with poverty, homelessness, filth and tat and the vivid colours and aromas of ethnic shops."
