I had good friends that would always take down their Christmas - TopicsExpress

I had good friends that would always take down their Christmas Tree on the day after Christmas. I have always thought it best to be more like my grandmother, who would carefully unfold the paper from Christmas gifts---save the ribbon, the bows, with at least the intention of possibly using them on some other day. Seeing the beauty in the paper, even though it might be torn, shreaded, Too often in our busy rush, we glory in the perfection of a great dinner---and neglect the same in leftovers that found their way to the refrigerator. Granted, a pie does not look the same when half of it has been removed from the pan-----a chopped up turkey doesnt have the same golden glow as one just carried to the table from the kitchen----but that is beside the point. I grew up in a house where we left the tree up until New Years. We kept it watered, kept it fresh, and even after it was taken from the house it often ended up stuck in the snowbank outside where it made a little more cover for the winter birds. Unlike television that seems to delight in wiping any trace of Christmas from its programing once the dollar signs have been removed, we little people would do well to sit, take the time to look at that pile of Christmas paper---see the color, see the print, see what there might not have been time to see on Christmas Eve, Christmas morning-----and take new joy in this season. While family, friends, might have moved on, while the rush is over, while the grand services, the concerts, the programs have finished-----while work looms over our heads---our resolve to enjoy this time should not end---but move into that mellow stage. It is not time to take down the tree------it is time to sit, eat a couple more cookies, and in the dark of your room, see the lights now that you have time. Now is the time to gather together your memories--think of how you have been blessed---see how the joy of the Christmas Season is really the joy you have in your everyday life. Leave the tree. Do not wash the pie pan until all the pie is gone.
