I had my finest Christmas in a very long while yesterday. It was a rare opportunity to celebrate it with the despised, rejected and often overlooked in our society because some of us fail to see a piece of God in every human being. Weve been friends for long, and so they always look forward to seasons like this to identify with me. Do you know who they are? They are those I refer to as my constituency members, the water hawkers, commonly referred to as mai ruwa, vulganizers, black marketers, carpenters, etc. Yesterday, they were with me for Christmas celebration. Thankfully, we had enough pounded yam with egusi soup and white rice with stew. Each person chose what to eat; nothing was imposed. They drank the same treated water we drink. They ate with the same plates and spoons we use in the house. There was no discrimination whatsoever. I had wanted to capture them on camera to post for you, but on a second thought, I dropped the idea because it was not some publicity stunt for me; it was an opportunity to identify with them because they know that Ive always considered them as my friends, religion and social status so called notwithstanding. It was while they were enjoying the meals that Jesus words came so strongly to my heart following an invitation to a dinner by a wealthy host: Then he (Jesus) turned to his host. When you put on a luncheon or a banquet, he said, dont invite your friends, brothers, relatives, and rich neighbors. For they will invite you back, and that will be your only reward. 13 Instead, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. 14 Then at the resurrection of the righteous, God will reward you for inviting those who could not repay you. Luke 14:12-14. It was not for the reward; it was just the joy of letting these friends know that I love them. This is what we should live for. My 2014 Christmas has been most fulfilling!
