I had one of those “Luckier Than I Deserve” experiences today - TopicsExpress

I had one of those “Luckier Than I Deserve” experiences today at Costco. Filled the cart, came to the long check-out line, and was even less annoyed than usual by doddering shoppers in front of me. Finally I transferred my goodies to the conveyor and moved up to the checker to pull the Costco card and Amex out of my front pocket where I always put them on entering the store. No Amex. “Can I have your Costco card sir?” “Um yeah, but my Amex is gone.” Not her problem, really, but I told her anyway. She was the only one there to tell. I used my debit card to check out but I HAVE LOST MY AMEX IN COSTCO. Sunday afternoon busy Costco. If it was less than $200 they won’t even need to sign. Costco has to be the worst place to lose an Amex card. I looked up Amex on my phone Contacts list as I went to Customer Service where I told my tale, left my name and number, etc. But obviously the card will be used, laughed about, and tossed. If I am lucky. I almost punched up the call to Amex to tell them to lock the card immediately, but I decided there is only one time it could have come out of my pocket: when I pulled the phone out of that same pocket to call Linda (in Valdez for the weekend) to ask what cheese she asked me to get. But that was what: 20 minutes ago? More like 30 or 35. Fat chance. I got my cart surveyed and receipt marked by that obligatory nice person after the checkers (why?), then put the cart into overdrive and wove it like Steve McQueen in Bullitt to the back of the store. I was like the driver on the Seward Highway that people call 911 about. A hard right into the new walk-in cheese cooler (used to be the veggie walk-in), then another hard right to the mozzarella. There it was. Still on the floor, face down. Costco. Best place to lose your Amex. Everybody is so focused on the goods they don’t look at the floor. Or you could just listen more closely when you wife asks you to get cheese.
