I had questioned some sweeping statements on the economic prospects of West Bengal which led my friends to immediately leap to the conclusion that I am a closet supporter of Ms Banerjee. Its much like Ms Banerjee herself clubbing all those who question her as Maoists. I notice the same sweeping statements from journalists and some former scientists about the future and past of our state. I urge them to check the RBI data on the states GDP, revenue and agricultural growth data for the last three years. Thanks to Amit Mitras efficiency as a finance minister, these numbers would surprise a lot of critics who think that this is a failed state. The state in my not so humble opinion has suffered largely due to its inept, inefficient and utterly corrupt group of pseudo industrialists who are no better than traders or middlemen. They have systematically ruined sterling organisations like Dunlop, Shaw Wallace, GKW, Exide, Hindustan Motors and many others. The blame has fallen on the state and its workforce and work culture. My question is if we have such a tardy work culture how do companies like IBM, TCS, IFB, Wipro, Siemens, Ericsson, Cognizant, PwC, etc thrive and prosper here despite the political climate. They do because they are modern companies which are technologically strong with a global market to cater to; everything those trader run companies werent. Ms Banerjee came with a huge goodwill which she squandered in no time. I still want her to succeed because I have a stake in my state and I will not tolerate morons who only criticise without substance in their words or solution in their mind. They dont have a stake here or are hired journalists working for a megalomaniac idiot.
