I had quite forgotten exactly why I find The Magus by John Fowles - TopicsExpress

I had quite forgotten exactly why I find The Magus by John Fowles such a powerful book. As I am re-reading it I am reminded, quite precisely, of where I was when I read each particular section for the first time back, I think, in 1979. I am amazed at how many turns of phrase that Fowles has Nicholas Urfe use that I remember from my previous readings. But what is most powerful for me is that the introductory London chapters are simply so relatable to my life in London in the late 1970s. It is as if Fowles had somehow been aware of how my life was in those hedonistic, self-centred days. everything that Urfe does, thinks and says were EXACTLY the kind of things I did, thought and said at that time. I was so like him it is(was?) uncanny. Urfes relationship with Alison is so similar to the my relationships at that time that it disturbs me to read the sections, even now over 35 years later. I am taken back instantaneously to so many situations and encounters ... But I know that as I read on it will by Conchis with whom I will relate to the most this time round .... Is Conchis actually the Daemon to Urfes Eidolon? Is Fowles Godgame just another variation on the Bohmian IMAX? Who knows, because in the final analysis the mark of a great novel is how much it resonates with its reader ... and by this measure The Magus is a Great Novel .... for me anyway.
