I had some interesting times last week. Wednesday I attended the ceremony to swear in Will Metcalf as the representative for District 16, the Conroe area. Will was seated as the result of a special election and was the only rep sworn in that day. I met State Senator Robert Nichols, who is my area senator. Took a photo op with him. Discovered Wimberly and the good food and shops in the area on Thursday. Friday I went to the Walls Unit at Huntsville and met the volunteers from Restorative Justice who work with the families of inmates being released. I met and spoke with a family who had driven from San Angelo to be there when their son and brother was released and another family from Mineral Wells who were there for a release of the ladys brother. Saturday we made a trip to the prison hospital in Galveston for a visit with my friends nephew who is seriously ill, mostly as a result of the substandard medical treatment he received at the Estelle Unit. Then we wrapped up Sunday morning with a visit to a very small, very caring church, Eagles Nest in Conroe. Varied experiences that have given me a lot to think about. Mostly about how even though I have had some bumps in the road, I have been very lucky. There are a lot of folks who need daily thoughts and prayers from the rest of us. The mother from San Angelo wants the best for her son and hopes he will be able to not return to the culture that caused him to go to prison. As I listened to her plans I wondered if she may not smother him with too much love. Families are the forgotten victims. When I see their faces and look into their eyes, I see hope, confusion, an overall sadness that the rest of us know nothing about, pray for them, please.
