I had some time to think about all of the ice bucket challenges Ive seen flying across my screen and Ive had to reconsider and take a look at myself before i did what I did with it today. When this all started catching on I was somewhat reactionary in nature, I got all haughty minded and considered myself above it. The words sheeple and lemmings entered my head right away and for the first few days of seeing it, I remained that way. Sometime late last week I had it hit me, mainly because I was thinking about my old neighbor who died from the disease everyone is wanting to find a cure for. And yes, I had considered the whole aspect of the stem cell research. I came to the conclusion that its a true and certainly good thing when people react the way I did not, at first, to join in on the fund raising and have a little laugh doing it. If youre having difficulty understanding the phenomenon because you take issue with embryonic stem cell research, there is a simple solution to still give, ALS.org will not use your money in that aspect of their research support if you say so up front. There are also other organizations who are doing much the same in trying to find a cure for ALS. If youre balking at the whole social bandwagon, think about this, it is working and working for a good cause. Even if only half of the people youve seen do the challenge give the donation, its still worth it, if for nothing else than a good laugh. I hope this has done everything the people who started it have hoped for, may there be another phenomenon like it in the future for the other many good reasons to give.
