I had the extraordinary pleasure to see Mariza perform this past Sunday. Prior to then I had no knowledge of her or Fado. And I had avoided learning, what I consider, the painful relationship between Portugal and Africa and Brazil and Portugal is reported it as the first European country to engage in the enslavement of Africans. I experienced something transformative witnessing Mariza as she spoke to her personal experiences, her love of Africa, her love of Fado. And sharing her beautiful gift her voice, her extraordinary presence her knowledge of Fado and the tales of the songs all sung in Portuguese. I am now a sworn student of Mozambique, Brazil and Portugal.
