I had the fun privilege of filling in to conduct some impromptu conditioning drills for the gymnasts where my daughters train. All of them pushed very hard but I noticed a change in attitude in some of the young lady’s as I went from toddler to teens. The older they were the more likely I heard complaints and received greater resistance when the perceived effort became more physically challenging and tiring. Both the younger and the older did the same exercises so the only difference was the mindset that was held. I conclude then that this has to be a learned response from the environments the older girls have had more conditioning from. We must be more cautious to instill in our young people a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction from doing what others are unwilling to do. Teach them to love hard work… to find it a right of passage into growing success. Encourage them and congratulate them for doing more than the norm. I applauded them in those moments of ‘mental battle’ that they have learned and are continuing to learn the skills necessary to become amazing gymnast but the difference maker will be their conditioning so learn to love this part as well. When your competitors are fatigued you will have only began to push harder toward that vault and this team and each of you will find yourself on the top podium or at least satisfied that you were able to display all your amazing skills when the rest were satisfied in quitting when it got tough.
