I had the honor on Saturday of attending the #100WildIslands - TopicsExpress

I had the honor on Saturday of attending the #100WildIslands celebration at Murphys Cove on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia. I was there representing major land donor Roger Gerard who has donated his familys land on Gerard Island. The Nova Scotia Nature Trust presented him with a plaque which I was pleased to accept on his behalf. --- Roger’s ancestors settled Gerard island in the 1700’s and many generations were born, and lived there, off the land and sea. His grandfather, Burris Gerard, and his family, moved to Massachusetts in the 1920’s, which is the twist of fate that made Roger an American. His one regret, he tells me, is that he did not realize he could have applied to be a Canadian citizen before he turned 24. He only learned of this missed opportunity after his father’s death. Roger has always felt a deep connection with his family here on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia and his roots on Gerard island. He has many wonderful memories of visits to the area over the past 60 years and especially his trips to the island. The old Gerard homestead has long since fallen down, but the spirit of all those who lived and worked there still lingers. Roger wanted this spirit to live on and for the land to be preserved for the enjoyment of all. How wonderful that Roger had the opportunity to give this priceless gift to the people of Nova Scotia! I want to thank the board, staff and volunteers of the Nova Scotia Nature Trust for all the work they do to make the preservation of property possible. Roger Gerard hopes his gift will be enjoyed for generations to come, and will be an inspiration to others. https://youtube/watch?v=8sbNU5FVY7s
