I had the most humbling lunch today ever. Donna McClelland, Laura McClelland and I attended the final reunion of VF192, the fighter squadron that my dad flew with in the Navy. He and his buddies flew F4U-Corsairs, a single-engine, 2,000 horsepower plane off of aircraft carriers in the Korean War. Many of the men had long careers in the Navy, several reaching the rank of Captain, and two making it to Admiral. At least two of them were commanding officers on aircraft carriers. At ages 21-23 they were flying heavily armed planes into combat, fighting for their country. How amazing it was/is. And yet, to a person, they were the most modest, unassuming men you could ever meet. (When I was 21 year old I was working at a sporting goods store in Beverly Hills!) It made me so proud that my dad was one of them and grateful that I got to meet them.
