I had the opportunity to visit Western Mindanao Command in Zamboanga City on the afternoon of 30 August 2014 and was warmly received by LTGEN Rustico Guerrero AFP, Commander WESTMINCOM. I was also able to dialogue with the troops of WESTMINCOM about the history of Magdalo, what we are doing in Congress, and about all other security related issues. Afterwhich, there was an open forum. One of the questions that was asked that inspired me was what is the assurance that, in spite of your cause of fighting corruption in government and was detained for it, you will not be eaten by the very system that you abhor? Kasi nga daw, yung mga nauna sa amin parang ganun na ang nangyari. Well, honestly, only time will tell. What i assured them of was that I am very much aware of the reasons why we went against the administration of GMA and was detained for it, the mandate of the people why we are in Congress, and our responsibility to the Filipino people who believed and embraced the vision of the Magdalo. I urged them to hold us accountable and caution or even question us in any hint of us getting astray from the path we have professed to pursue. The greatest challenge, I said, is when the entitlement and lifestyle of being in power (in my case, a congressman) gets in our head. Furthermore, I told them that I consider myself as an ordinary man like them only with increased responsibility to country and fellow Filipinos. My parting words to them were to continue to serve the country with courage and dignity as there are no other nobler profession than being in the military in whose hands depend our freedom and our way of life. Mabuhay kayo! Sa muli, nagtanim ako ng indian tree sa gilid ng granstand ng WESTMINCOM.
