I had the pleasure of being back in Birmingham this week and visited some of my old haunts. This has been brought up on this page a few times so I thought I would share a picture... This road runs parallel to Highland Ave alongside Highland Golf Course. Over the years Ive heard it called Mirage Road and Gravity Road and Gravity Hill. Look at the picture...the upper street appears to be on a fairly significant grade. From this angle, it looks like you would be driving uphill if you drove on this road. Its an optical illusion. The road is perfectly flat...Highland Avenue is actually running downhill at this point and creates an illusion that the upper road is not flat. I did the same thing yesterday that Ive done a dozen times...I put my car in neutral without my foot on the pedal and I did not roll an inch. The illusion is very real! :)
