I had this really hilarious identity moment yesterday when I caught my reflection while walking down the hallway at Mountain BizWorks (where Ive been teaching Foundations and doing 1-on-1 business coaching) full-on wearing a blazer with shoulderpads, bright lipstick, bouffant hairdo, looking straight-up like Sally Rhoden circa 1986, when she was a power-blazer mom. I also noticed that my name tag said Business Developer and I had an extra laugh. And it IS funny, but at the same time, I feel so full-circle myself right now. Counseling folks on growing their dreams of self-sufficiency is not too different than my counseling work as a social worker a decade ago, and brings me the same deep sense of purpose and satisfaction. And a lot of the businesses and business ideas that are happening right now have grown out of peoples desire to be more self-sufficient, and self-responsible, and to take fewer resources from other parts of the earth, to take back our communities and neighborhoods from massive corporations and develop our own cultures again. I hope that more working-class people can put down roots here that will nurture themselves and their families, and Im not talking in a fancy way, but in a sustainable way, a just and generous way. I fear that these opportunities are dwindling. I hope we can work on that together.
