I had three encounters today that made me realize yet again just how much work we have before us until more people give more consideration to non humans. The first encounter was as I was buying poultry grit. A woman behind me in line asked, How many chickens do you have?, and How many eggs do you get a week? When I explained that I was buying grit for chickens at a sanctuary and that we never eat the eggs ourselves as were all vegan, she looked at me as though I had three heads and got very quiet very quickly. I tried. I wonder if it worked at all. The second encounter was with a homeless woman with a very young cat on her shoulder. The cat was panting and clearly in distress so I said hello, and tried to gentle point out the cats need for water. I offered to duck in to a restaurant quickly to get the kitty some water, and some food for her. She agreed, but when I came out with water and food, she was gone. I tried. It didnt help the cat or the person. The third encounter was with a group of people reading a restaurant sign board. They were excited because there were five specials of the day, and all were dishes made with chickens. This is always distressing, but it is even harder still with the recent death of Guinevere and the recent arrival in our home of Autumn. I went into the restaurant and smilingly asked to speak to the manager. He wasnt there, but I was told I could leave a message. I left a written note asking that there be a vegan item offered on special each day since the restaurant has a number of vegan options. I left my email and my phone number. I tried. It was the best I could do.
