I had to block/unfriend someone who Ive known for years this afternoon. :-( This saddens me, deeply. But when I choose to open a political discussion on my page, it is an opportunity for you to show that you can both educate and be educated, in civil and enlightened ways. The key word is opportunity, not right. Opportunities always come with opportunity-costs. Leave the heated buzzwords at home. It is not an opportunity for you to demonstrate a knee-jerk, callow-youthful, attitude that says Ive been taught this so, without checking it, of *course* it must be right. For instance, I will *NOT* tolerate the confusion some supposed patriots have where they assume that all my lawyer and accountant can get away with tax evasion is so ingrained in our American way of life that it is almost Holy Writ. Thats not patriotism, it is a recipe for national group-sociopathy. Comparing a society that values progressive taxation (defined as if youre rich, u should pay more) with calling this administrations policies communism is more revealing about you than about this administration; it is also a recipe for getting yourself gone from my friends list. Folks, know this: if you think my sympathy is with the rich whose lawyers know how to exploit the system, think again. Thats not Biblical, its first-world culture-warped. Be very careful that you know who youre talking to-- you may end up on the outs with me! Ive spent too much time relying for my living income on the insurance that is Social Security Disability -- notice, I use the correct word, insurance, not entitlement -- to be sympathetic with those who seem to need to look down on those like me who arent as fortunate. I paid into it, I earned it, and I refuse to be judged as a taker, by supposed maker-sympathizers. It still appalls me that, to paraphrase William Greider, in the name of prosperity, Americans are helping to support individuals (and enterprises) that do not reciprocate the loyalty. Being on SSDI afforded me the opportunity to spend more time with my daughter, between when she was 6 and we lost her mom, and age 25 when she moved out to go to school. So when you come on here to discuss issues of taxation, social safety-nets and, lets call it what it is, class-warfare-waged-from-above, that I have brought to the table, just know that I will ALWAYS editorialize with what John Scalzi calls the mallet of correction when and if I feel I have to.
