I had to bury a calf yesterday. Having been born & raised on a farm, it wasnt the first time, & unless my brother Jeff stops raising cattle, it wont be my last, but that didnt make it any easier. He was a handsome little thing, a few days old, seemingly physically perfect, with four white stockings as markings. I dont know what happened-maybe he couldnt or wouldnt nurse, or his mother couldnt or wouldnt deal with him. Jeff thought he seemed to be in sort of a daze, but it was too soon to tell. The other cattle, normally curious, kept their distance, seeming to sense something was wrong & not wanting to have any part of it. Maybe it was Natures answer to a defect or abnormality, & death is a part of life, but Nature can be cruel & unforgiving.
