I had to buy groceries for Greg and Nancy today. Finding the supermarket was easy. It shouldnt be when you are in a strange city - where you dont read or speak the language. And Nancys hotel is in old Athens - a rats nest of twisting streets and graffiti covered old buildings full of little shops - all of which look the same. They gave me the supermarket address at the front desk: 52 επιχείρηση ενισχύθηκε Okay..... Still - with their pantomimed instructions I managed to walk right to it. Two blocks down the street and one block to the left and there it was. Finding a place that can repair a broken wheelchair charger was a different deal altogether. I went to the shop recommended by the hotel. Again - I got an unreadable Greek address and pantomimed instructions and managed to find the first shop. I had to use creative sign language to tell them I suspected a blown fuse needed to be replaced. They signed to me that they couldnt fix it but suggested another place a few streets away. Pantomimed instructions and an unreadable address and I was off again. Same deal at the next stop. After about 15 iterations of this scenario I finally struck pay dirt. There was a stereo equipment repair shop on the second floor of a very questionable, deserted looking apartment building. Did I mention all of this searching was in the old part of Athens? Run-down, dirty, super narrow streets and lots of graffiti. I was pretty sure the 14th failed prospect had sent me to be robbed or murdered. But I got buzzed through the door and went in anyway. The repair shop had an electrician who couldnt work on the charger right away - but he was sure he could fix it. So I pick it up tomorrow. Well see - might get it back working - might get back a box of parts. Either way - were no worse off than we are now. Even if the guy cant fix it - I will still consider finding the shop one of my most impressive achievements....
