I had to reschedule our housecleaning because the water was gonna be off in our building at the regular time. I called @Homejoy, and the very helpful rep let me know our usually cleaning professional wasnt available, but she could help find another contractor. Do you mind having a male clean your apartment? I paused because my brain processed the weight of that question. Ive been asked that when it comes to doctors. I was flummoxed to hear that, apparently, people have gender preferences for who comes to help around the house. Then I remembered that the one time security in our building gave a housecleaning professional a hard time and refused entrance to our flat was when a male cleaner had come to work. Three different women come in, no problem but a male housecleaning pro is somehow suspect. I care if they have good reviews, I finally managed. DO people really care about the gender of the cleaning professionals??! The rep sighed Yeah, its common for people to not want to hire men. Of course I booked the guy. He showed up this evening, a young Brother with a shy smile and someones name scrolled across the right side of his neck. I showed him the necessary stuff, invited him to control the climate if he got too hot or cold, and he got started. Herr Meister and I eventually went out for our evening stuff and returned to a well-done job. Now, while he did a great job there WAS one difference I noted. Attributable to gender? I cant say. But this guy was the first cleaning professional who did NOT clean HMs desk. HM was thrilled. I was bemused. A whole lot of the folks who clean houses are POC. Ganesha knows Ive done my share of tidying other peoples messes. And it never occurred to me that yet again here was a place where Black men get a raw deal.
