I had to take the deposition of an expert witness in Madison today, so I drove over last night. When I checked in at the Concourse, the desk clerk asked (as always) for a credit card and a picture i.d. It finally piqued my curiosity, so as I showed him my drivers license I asked, Is that a big problem around here? People checking in under false names? He made a sound that might qualify as the statutory minimum required for a laugh. Seriously, though, whats the point of the i.d. requirement? To discourage fugitives on the run from staying there -- fugitives who are willing to use credit cards with their own names on them? Or to discourage people from mugging someone, stealing his or her wallet, and then checking into a hotel with the stolen property -- in other words, from incriminating themselves in the most obvious way imaginable?
