I hate the tag line used at the end of this (and so many other) story: He was a documented gang member. It is both offensive, and meaningless, on many different levels: First, documented by who? Based on what evidence? Just because something is on a piece of paper somewhere doesnt make it true. In many cases, the documentation consists of a contact card filed out by an officer during a random (illegal) stop and is based on who he was standing with or where he was standing. Other times, it is based on an unverified statement by a confidential informant. Second, and more importantly, including this phrase in a story is intended to suggest that his gang membership was somehow related to his death, without doing the actual investigation required to gather evidence. In this case, I see no proof that he was shot BECAUSE of his gang membership. Even gang members can be innocent victims. Third, and most important of all, why does it ever matter? Every death is a tragedy. The fact that a particular victim may have been associated with a gang is irrelevant. It is still a life lost. Still a mother without a son; a child without a father. We need to still care.
