I hate to be the contrarian again, but I wasnt the biggest fan of Obamas SOTU speech. I may have been hypnotized by Boehners face matching the red stripe of the flag, who knows. But there was something else which I havent been able to put my finger on. Kristof hit it for me with this op-ed. First off, the speech was full of Obama taking credit for things for which he deserves none. Kristin ticks off a few. Let me add another straw-man favorite of our President - the Paycheck Fairness Act - equal pay for women. Ive written about this issue extensively and the fault is largely with Obama and Harry Reid. We had two years (09 and 10) - we had control of the Senate and the bill had passed the House already under Pelosi before Obama took office. Obama and Reid sat on it until Dems had lost control of the Senate and then, it was too late. And the income inequality - the new new thing of politics, thankfully and finally! But under Obama, that gap has widened, considerably. In all, in my humble opinion, Obama seems interested in focusing this end bit trying to clean up and define his legacy. Lets admit: unless you count yourself amongst his most ardent fans, youll agree, it hasnt been too hot so far. But fortunately - and he and his advisors know this - we all just remember the last 5 minutes of the show before the previews for the next episode start.
