I hate to do this, but it needs to be said. Yes, Secretary is a far superior story to Fifty Shades, but its far from perfect. And heres the main thing that bugs me (rant and spoilers ahead): one of the main criticisms of Fifty Shades is that for Christian, BDSM is a symptom of past abuse, and Anas aim is to cure him so he can be a nice normal person. Which is quite a negative portrayal of BDSM. But is Secretary much better? Mr Grey clearly uses BDSM to manage his OCD/anxiety, and Lee ends up using it as a replacement for her self-harming. Dont get me wrong: I love the film, and I love the fact that the main characters are flawed and real and find this far-from-Hollywood-perfect love story. But once I would like to see a film which portrays BDSM practitioners as happy people doing something they just happen to enjoy. Some positivity is needed!
