I have 2 children, one has just started school but her older - TopicsExpress

I have 2 children, one has just started school but her older brother was educated in Birmingham in the 2 tier system. There is no doubt in my mind that the 3 tier system is far superior, based on personal experience. My son started school at 4 and was one of 30 (there was no choice - you attended the school closest to your home.) He stayed there until he was 11 when we moved to Uttoxeter. His class teacher was the Maths, English, PE, drama, science and everything else teacher. There were no specialist classrooms, equipment, labs or teachers. At eleven the fun started, off to big school the closest also having a college of further education attached with 11 - 23 year olds all mixing together and using the same entrance - I felt this was not the right learning environment for my young son, far too many much older students and distractions so I moved to Uttoxeter. I then discovered that my son who his primary school regularly described as extremely bright was seriously lacking huge pockets of knowledge and spent a year playing catch up. Not necessarily his old teachers fault but he hadnt learnt a language or even seen a science lab in primary school. He just wasnt given the opportunity to learn and develop as he grew older. We were both blown away by the facilities and specialist teaching at Oldfields, all in a safe, nurturing environment. He settled in very quickly even though he had to play catch up and he felt more grown up moving around the school, being taught by different teachers. He progressed very quickly, he was ready for the challenge. His school in Birmingham wasnt a bad school but just didnt have the facilities and specialist teachers that the middle schools in Uttoxeter have. By the age of 13 he was ready for high School and mature enough to cope with the transition. He went into the 6th Form and finally graduated from Durham University. Thank you Uttoxeter 3 tier system!
