I have Not met the Field Marshal.Bhat,One of his Convoy Drivers,Mr.George (in his susequent life as a Civilian) worked as a follower for me in My 10 years Tenure at Trichur. We both wept when the Marshall passed away :( Today is the birth centenary of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw – military genius, extra-ordinary leader, patriot and one of the bravest sons of India - and one of most Inspiring Indians Ive ever had the honour of meeting. Sam “Bahadur” led the Indian Army during the Indo-Pakistan war in 1971 which led to the liberation of Bangladesh and during his four-decade military career saw him participate in World War II, the three wars against Pakistan and the 1962 India-China War. As we prepare to elect a new leader for the nation, Sam Manekshaw’s address at Defence Services College, Wellington on Leadership and Discipline 11th November, 1998 is a must read. bit.ly/1gQhacW On the military knowledge of politicians, he had famously said I wonder whether those of our political masters who have been put in charge of the defence of the country can distinguish a mortar from a motor; a gun from a howitzer; a guerrilla from a gorilla, although a great many resemble the latter. On his death, neither the PM or Defence Minister or any of the so called Political leaders deemed it fit to attend his funeral!
