I have a big nerd rage against a lot of people. These people are many of the Star Wars fans who complain the Death Star was blown up from and exhaust port. 1. The exhaust port was a one-in-a-million hit. Luke, an accomplished and and natural pilot skilled at acting under pressure, needed to use the force at close range to hit it, after another pilot failed. 2. The imperials would have predicted an all-out assault or attempt to fly through a hangar bay. With a station of such magnificence, they couldnt worry about an exhaust port. This thing is the size of a MOON, for heavens sake! 3. It could not have been Boarded up. It was needed because waste and extra fuel from the main reactor, which is HUGE, THIS THING IS THE SIZE OF A MOON YOU NEED A HUGE POWER REACTOR, had to get out. Otherwise it would stay in, gunk up the engines, and possibly get ignited and blow the damn thing up. 4. The hole already had defenses-ray shields. For the above mentioned reason, they could only have ray shield. Solids, gases, and most liquids could pass through it. Not energy. Otherwise, youd lose leaking power from the main reactor. Also, if youd had a grate on it instead of a full plate, the torpedoes velocity would have blasted it out of the way. These things need to travel fast through space. There is no gravity to aid their passage. 5. As I said, this thing is HUGE. The main reactor could well be one quarter the size of the station. Even if not, theres a monumental power pool, probably very unstable. Two powerful, solid torpedoes would be just the catalyst to cause a chain reaction. And because this power source is so huge, it would be powerful enough to blow the entire son of a gun to subatomic particles. Smithereens. Whatever you wanna call em. Technically, any starfighters, like Lukes, would be caught in the blast, but you cant kill off the protagonist in the first film. So anyway, thats my truth rage.
