I have a confession to make. Ive given up on literary fiction. I read The Goldfinch and thought it was waaaaayy overrated and under-edited. Then I read something called Fourth of July Creek, which got great reviews and seemed promising, but ultimately left me unsatisfied because of what seemed like an kind of pretentiously depressing grittiness and a lot of loose ends (which is the literary way, of course.) And I finally have admitted to myself, after having gotten to page 634 in Infinite Jest over the last 3 years, I am never going to finish that book and whats more I kind of resent David Foster Wallace for having wasted so much of my time. So I read one of my wifes action/fantasy books about a dystopic future where everyone pretty much lives in the simulated reality of a massive video game--Ready Player One--and I enjoyed it. It was 100% plot driven, but not badly written, and just kind of a fun read. Then I read a straight up thriller called Those Who Wish Me dead, with actual character development and prose that doesnt get in its own way, and I loved it. So what should I read next? I want a really good story, great (or at least solid) writing, and at least some characters I care about.
