I have a confession to make, sometimes when I read my bible, I - TopicsExpress

I have a confession to make, sometimes when I read my bible, I just read words and never take the time to think about or realize the power in what it is saying. I know that I am the only one that does this (sic), but I thought it best to let others know where they could hold me accountable. One particular verse has come to mind as of late, and that is Psalms 34:8 “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him!” What does that mean, “taste of the Lord”, is it a literal statement or is it figurative, I don’t know. What I do know though is this, it is a challenge! I think a good analogy to explain this might be that of an apple. Apples can come in all different shapes and sizes. They can be red, yellow, green or other colors as well, but all we can do is judge by their appearance whether we deem them attractive or not. We can walk through the orchard and smell their fragrance, but does that really tell us what the quality of the fruit is going to be? When we grab one with our hands, we can tell whether it is firm or soft, but yet we still are left with the question of is this apple good. We have looked at its color, smelled it’s fragrance and touched its skin, but it is not till we take that first bite, we have tasted it, that we can determine whether it is good. I think this is what David was talking about; we need to move past all of the peripheral aspects that we know “about” God, and know Him. Acts 19:11-16 is a great example of this; “Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them. Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We[a] exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?”Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered[b] them, and prevailed against them,[c] so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.” They knew about God, but did not “know” Him. They saw His power displayed in Paul’s life and recognized that it was good, but they still didn’t know Him. Paul had tasted of the Lord and he knew that he could trust Him in anything that he was led to do by HIS Spirit. Somehow I don’t think Paul just read the words on the page as he went over the scrolls, but sought out the author of those words. He wanted HIM to reveal HIS heart’s message in those words where he could “know” Him. There is power in the words written in scripture, which is why HE gave us those words; we just need to take HIM at HIS word and taste of HIM. My challenge to you, to myself, is as we read HIS word, let’s taste of Him and see His goodness pour blessings upon us.
