I have a couple of thoughts about AKC shows! First let me state, I have been showing at AKC shows for almost 40 years now so Ive been there and done that! :) Plus, we have done more than our share of winning, almost all owner handled. BUT, I think it is getting worse for the owner handler and not better! CLUBS, please try and refrain from hiring, especially on cluster shows, all handler friendly judges! Believe it or not and contrary to popular beliefs, if you hire judges that will actually not only give a look to the O/H, but may put them up, your entries will go UP!!! The handlers will come anyway, BUT the O/Hs will come out in droves to support your shows! Quit catering to the pros and start making it a more enjoyable experience for the backbone of purebred dogs, the B/O/H!! Quit allowing the pros to save space, when you squeeze and cramp the O/H into smaller and smaller spaces. If your premium says no tables ringside, then ENFORCE it and dont make exceptions for the pros while shooing the O/H out from under the tents with a crate because they have brought, Lord forgive them, two dogs to support your show! Give them the same courtesy you seem to always extend to the pros! Quit treating them like royalty and the O/H as peons. Keep it a level playing field and the O/H will support you. Okay off my soapbox!!
