I have a course on electoral systems this semester and our teacher - TopicsExpress

I have a course on electoral systems this semester and our teacher analyzed the Israeli pure proportional representation system this morning. He basically explained that the Israeli political system is democratic, there is a total power division, theres a pluralistic number of political parties from the left to the right, including Arab parties. He said that Netanyahu often needs to implement radical policies because of its coalition, but he claimed the Likud is usually a moderate right-wing party advocating for a strong security apparatus to protect Israeli citizens from terrorist attacks. He claimed the far-right is powerful because of the highly democratic standards of the Israeli political system who gives a voice to small political parties within the government coalition, and because theres a huge polarization due to a permanent state of war and a sense of insecurity among the electorate. He didnt talk about Israeli settlements, refused to say that Zionism is a religious movement. He acknowledges that Zionism is a pluralistic movement founded by secular Ashkenazi Jews, but theres an important religious dimension because of religious and Orthodox Zionist Jews. He, however, emphasized on the fact that Israel is NOT a theocracy. It is a solid democracy. I am really satisfied by his very balanced approach.
