I have a dear sweet woman who has adopted me as her son. I have adopted her as my mother. It is a long story that some day I will share if she will join me. Tender and beautiful. But, it didnt start out this way. It started out with her hating me. She didnt watch or listen. She only read what was written about me. She hated me. She is black. She thought I was a racist. God told her to pray for me. She didnt want to. She then went to restoring love a year later at Dallas cowboy stadium. She didnt want to. Several months later we met. She wanted to. I didnt know her or know that she had prayed for me or hate spent two years hating me. We cried a lot that night. We prayed even more, She is now my adopted mom. Her name is Falma. She is a very young 70. We pray together, sing together and laugh together. Tonight after seeing Selma (she lived through it) she came over. Occasionally she will bless us by bringing some amazing friends. Tonight there were twenty of us around the table eating BBQ. We had one of the best, honest and open conversations about MLK and the situation in todays world. I want to have it again with you next time. I think America is yearning for something real, authentic and not about grudges or power. Just the truth and a path forward. Can we all get together and be better than the world expects and better than we may even think we can be? Yes. We did tonight. We even struggled through a song I requested: Lift every voice and sing. It is a song Alveda King taught me. It was a full throated and full throttle gospel night at the Beck house tonight. What a mix. Young and old, black and white, rich and struggling, Christian and Jew. The Orthodox Jewish family that joined us left with huge smiles on their face as we all did. There is so much we all agree on. The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is huge and He has a great surprise he is planning for us all. We just must love each other. I hope my children always remember the people we were blessed to have at our home who brought such joy and light into our lives.
