I have a dilemma. Im hoping that you who have more experience in the Orff arena can give me some advice. I have been building marimbas for almost two years now. I have recently started getting more business. So far, my customers have been very happy with my work. As demand grows, I am wondering if I need to reconsider the name of my business. It is called Zimba Marimbas (zimbamarimbas). A few months ago a fellow marimba builder advised me that I might want to reconsider my business name. I value his opinion. Anything with words zim or zimba could be misleading, as my marimbas are not strictly Zimbabwean. My question is, what constitutes a traditional Zimbabwean marimba? I have looked at other builders, whose marimbas are considered Zimbabwean marimbas. Some are box style, some are tube resonator style, and some have no resonators at all. To be strictly Zimbabwean, should they have gourd resonators? I have heard that originally, the musicians would dig a hole in the ground, then place the frame with the bars over the hole. Am I being overly analytical here? Is this something I should be concerned about? Is it an ethical concern? I mostly just dont want to be misleading. Thanks in advance for any advice you offer; it is appreciated.
