I have a few more comments/questions about Surprised by Joy before we put it back onto the shelf. In the final chapter Lewis mentions reading The Everlasting Man as one of the things that kept pulling him toward Christianity. I think its glorious the way God uses tools that we (well, most of us) would never consider: G. K. Chesterton (author of The Everlasting Man) was every bit as Catholic as Tolkien -- and yet God used truths from his writings (all truth is Gods truth!) to accomplish His will. Not that I would recommend giving that book to a non-Christian in hopes of converting him -- but I am humbled by the way God uses whatever He chooses to use. Also, it strikes me that Lewis doesnt think his conversion story is all that unusual (I get this idea from the foreward/afterword of The Pilgrims Regress more than from this book precisely). Its an endearing quality, I think, when someone who is quite extraordinary doesnt recognize his uniqueness -- or at least how rare he is.
