I have a few questions for my friends in india. Please answer these questions by rising above your political affiliation. I would request you to first read my comment and then respond to my questions. I am beginning to notice that Indias electoral campaign is beginning to follow the American model. As individual candidates declare their candidacy and begin their campaign, their ability to collect campaign funds is openly discussed as a key criteria for success in election. When a certain candidate has significantly higher corpus of money in his/her campaign funds, the media begins to pay attention to him/her as a winnable candidate because he/she now has resources to unleash media campaign that has direct impact on public opinion. In India there was one election commissioner, T. N. Session, who recognized the role of money power in tilting electoral verdict and therefore he focused on using his powers as an election commissioner to limit and eliminate the money power. Now my questions are- Does the election commission of India hold responsibility to conduct elections in a manner where people of integrity and ideas, who do not have the backing of vested interests with unlimited sources of funds, get an equal and fair opportunity to contest and win as people with access to large stock piles of money? Does the election commission hold the responsibility to limit use of money in election campaign by national parties who have established a quid pro quo with the money bags? Of is it fair to let the market forces determine who wins and who rules?
