I have a firm policy. If someone is discussing a topic where I know I am not particularly educated, such as politics, I stay out of the conversation and leave it to the experts. I am happy to say I dont know. It isnt my area of expertise. However, when it comes to the gym and nutrition, it seems every single person has an opinion. Taking training advice from your friend in the gym is about as trustworthy as listening to the drunk guy in the corner of the pub for financial advice. They are confident they are giving you impeccable advice despite having no level of qualifications or training. They present their opinion as fact. Just because someone has a firm opinion does not make it factual. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. This does not mean that everyone is entitled to their own facts. I hear people discussing topics in the gym where research is inconclusive yet they are adamant they know the absolute best answer. It is amazing how often researchers dont know all the answers but guys in the gym think they have it all figured out. How often does someone in the gym actually say I dont know? Next time someone gives you advice ask yourself if they are a source of information you can trust.
