I have a friend in Hebrew Roots. I found what this guy had to say so I thought I would share: Ive been doing a bit of study in this area lately and Ill just throw some stuff out here for everyone. 1. Some (maybe even most) Messianic Jew are simply Jews who now believe Jesus Christ was the historical and their personal savior/Messiah. They arent heretical by any means at this point. 2. Some of this group who have lived under mitzvot (613 laws derived from the OT) have a hard time like Peter at first did, accepting they are free to eat anything they want or not obliged to honor holy days. They then keep those traditions, not as earning salvation or as the substance, but rather they are very aware that they keep them to point themselves daily to Christ. (It should be noted that this is somewhat subjective as it doesnt mean you are more spiritual as you can be pointed to Christ daily just fine without any external trappings. Just the scripture, sound theology, fellowship, a serving heart, evangelism and prayer. Christ is available to every believer by the Holy Spirit always.). This Is a conscience issue and we should not cause these brothers and sisters to stumble by our freedom (which is true free for us). 3. Hebrews roots movement is a different case than above. by and large HRM teaches that gentiles are grafted into physical Israel and thus they are genealogically Israelites. Hence why they wear tzitzit etc. This is just wrong and also offensive to physical Jews. (See #8 about externalism) 4. This causes them to have a superiority complex. Also this superiority complex is bolstered by being more in touch with the original Hebrew and some go so far as to teach that all our modern bibles have been corrupted by pagans and you need a true Hebrew translation. This is what every cult does. 5. Sacred name restoration is intimately connected to HRM but not the same. In its most basic form Id say SNR isnt heretical, when they are just suggesting replacing the OT use of LORD with Yahweh or the Hebrew tetragrammaton. Then Im fine with it. But when it goes further and does this to the NT which the Holy Spirit never used the word Yahweh but Kurios and they start putting Elohim in the NT in place of Theos and say that Theos is pagan and its blasphemy to say Theos, then you have gone too far. This extreme then is a gateway into HRM. 6. HRM is falling down on the ground and hugging the Shadow of Christ and denying his substance right in front of you. It puts a burden on people even the Pharisees could not bare. It gets to bring people back into the bondage of the terrors and thunders of the condemning mosaic law instead of the forgiveness and christian liberty in the law of Christ. If you break one law as you seek to live by the law youve broken them all. If you let yourself be circumsized then Christ is of no value to you gal 5:2. the law cannot justify you (gal 3:11) And you cannot rewrite Paul and Acts to say that christians have to keep the mosaic law. You just cant. Christ fulfilled it. Hebrews 7:12 where there is a change of priesthood there is a change of law. 7. The people promoting this doctrine of demons (like Jim Staley and 119 ministeries) are very charistamic and smart. They. Lure people in because they have been hurt by the church or theyve sensed something is wrong in evangelicalism and they give them an answer to that (the wrong one). 8. Lots of cults pull you in with externals. The emergent church has borrowed asceticism, prayer labyrinths, guided meditation, from catholic mysticism and Buddhism/Hinduism to draw people in. To this day my favorite question for catholics I witness to in the streets is what in the RC church excites you about Christ? And its always externals like stained glass, incense, Latin, crucifixes, or the Eucharist. Judaism does this too. Without spiritual substance you have to run to ritual and external physical beauty. But we have a peace and a beauty that surpasses this all. Its transcendent. Thats just a few thoughts, hope its helpful. :)
