I have a great deal of respect for Don and Kathy Trotter, and as such, I respectfully disagree with several of the statements they have made in the last day or so regarding the attempt to re-run the District 3 primary. Kathy has, in several posts, said something about may the best man win and that she hopes that both Buckey and Dumenil will both run, and be treated as gentlemen. The problem is, the die has already been cast. A primary election is, essentially, a gentlemans agreement among the candidates - a candidate decides that he or she is going to run as a candidate for a particular partys nomination, with the understanding that if he or she loses that race, someone else is going to be the nominee. Presumably, according to Kathys electoral logic, the winner of that nominating contest will be the best man. By running as a write-in candidate, Phil Dumenil breaks with that gentlemans agreement. Period. He says, I dont like the outcome of the nominating process, because I lost, and so forget the deal I made when I became a candidate for my partys nomination, Im going to run anyway. Im sorry, Kathy and Don, but thats a fundamentally non-gentlemanly thing to do. You may not like the fact that someone else is calling Phil Dumenil a sore loser for doing so, but the various laws that are on the books to prevent candidates from switching parties in order to get on a ballot in the general election after losing primaries are called sore loser laws for that very reason. The point is, there was primary election. Phil Dumenil ran as a republican in that election, and in doing so, tacitly agreed to abide by the results of that primary. The voters spoke, and he came out on the short end of the deal. As I said, I mean this with all respect to both of you. There is no point to having primaries, or having candidates affiliate with political parties in order to run with them, if the candidates are not going to abide by the election results. And as for me, I have little respect for candidates that break faith with the voters by doing so.
