I have a legit question that has been on my mind for a long time. In general, over the last 2-3 decades, Toyota/Lexus and Honda/Acura have proven to be two of the most reliable brands in the auto industry. Other Japanese cars have done OK too, and the Japanese have become known for dependability. My question is, how do they achieve this? If you look at a giant manufacturer who has truly high engineering capabilities like VW A.G. or BMW, how is it they cannot reach these standards in cars that cost more. Ive owned Japanese and European cars. My $140,000 Mercedes was beautifully engineered with rich materials, but was a nightmare as it broke down constantly. Even now, how does BMW sit mid-pack, their Mini brand sit at near bottom, while Lexus continues to sit at the top? I can never figure out why. I hope this post doesnt turn out to be a well my XYZ car has never broken down. I dont care about individual experiences. The statistics show that the Japanese (especially Toyota and Honda) have owned reliability. Can VW AG not figure out how to produce electrical connectors or electronic modules that are bug free? How is it that an Audi A7 or a BMW 650 is less reliable than a Honda Accord or a Toyota Tacoma? The Americans, the Koreans, the British, the Germans, the Italians.... none seem to be able to catch the Japanese. Why...
