I have a love/hate relationship with customer service departments. I either complicate their lives, or break up painfully boring routines: Dear General Electric: I’m sure you’re just as concerned as I am about the rash of butter dish suicides that are sweeping the country, especially since many of them are occurring in your appliances. In the last two months alone, I’ve witnessed three such events—butter dishes in the prime of their lives flinging themselves out of refrigerator doors and onto hard floors, where they smash into a million pieces. Gone forever. In none of the cases was there any warning that something might be wrong. It’s so bad that at my local grocery store, there’s an empty spot where replacement butter dishes could be purchased. I guess the next generation is looking for other means of employment, since this one seems to offer a relatively short life expectancy. I’ve been giving the matter some thought, and I’ve come up with some ideas on how to alleviate the problem. 1. Counseling. We reach out early, and we search for causes that lead to despair. 2. Encouragement. We let it be known that we greatly support the dairy containment arts, and their contribution to society. 3. Drug research. This will be expensive, but if you’ve ever needed butter for your instant mashed potatoes, you’d see the cost as a worthwhile investment. 4. Or you could just stop being cheap and mold an extra quarter-inch plastic lip into the butter compartment so that the damned dish doesn’t slide out every time you move the door. I know GE has a team working on this serious issue already. And I am confident you’ll stem this tide of woe. Yr. buddy, W.
