I have a meeting organised for 3pm tomorrow with the council to discuss these redevelopment plans. Im unsure of what exactly will come of it, but will let everyone know as soon as I do. I get the feeling that despite my initial doubts, the plans ARE happening, and pretty quickly. And I, for one am definitely not opposed to the redevelopment of Bretonside. All I can hope for is some fair consideration for the important independant businesses that reside here. For the moment, we have been lead to believe that all of us will be re-housed to another site somewhere. It looks like Im going to need to create some kind of proposal as to how we can move forward in the event of relocation, and as such will need hard evidence of how important WHITE RABBIT is to those who use it/ have used it on a regular basis. If I were to create a page on here called WHITE RABBIT TESTIMONIALS could i count on you guys to write a little piece on your experiences of coming here? For those that have expressed concern, or have offered support, may I please keep you poised to act... there will be a time when I will need your voices to be heard, to secure the right outcome for us all. For the first time since weve been here, we need the people and councillors of Plymouth to recognise that we exist, and that we make a difference, and that our little piece of Plymouth culture should be preserved. The government already offer state funding for the training of sound engineers, for practice space, event management (only a few things i can think of off the top of my head) so surely there is a definite need for a platform for people to use these skills? (i.e a venue?). WHITE RABBIT serves an attraction for people in the entire Southwest to come to Plymouth to attend the events we run. We nurture local musicians and bands. We have employed almost a hundred people over the years, very often when they were at their most vulnerable. We attract a large number of international visitors to Plymouth in the musicians and crew that come to play from all over the world, and offer an exciting program of events for any potential students of the University, who, if we didnt exist may have chosen another place to study. I am fully aware that if RABBIT disappears, someone will take the batten and start afresh, as has always happened in the past, and a new venue will arise. But I want to express my personal willingness to carry on, invest my time, experience and expertise in this field to contribute to making sure that Plymouth has a healthy local, national, international, underground and emerging music scene, in the niche that this venue currently sits, for the people that it matters to. You never know, this could all turn out to be a blessing in disguise. If the council were to recognise us, and support what we do here, they have the option to make everything a lot better. ...or we could be left out in the cold. Fingers crossed everyone... Love. x
