I have a new Hero. His name is Mike Carey! Way back in High School I had aspirations of being a professional football player. Like most teenage athletes I would fantasize how draft day would go. In my head I would hear the commissioner say, ......And with the 9th pick The Oakland Raiders select Hakim Muhammad!! Crowd goes wild etc. While doing this I would always dread being drafted by the Washington Redskins. I would try figure out a way to show my displeasure with being drafted by a team whose name offends me. Not wanting to offend the NFL I would think to myself the most subtle way to do this would be to NEVER say The Redskins. I would just refer to the team as Washington, or simply the team. If people caught on, cool, if not, also cool. NFL Referee Mike Carey has been doing EXACTLY this since 2004! He told the NFL that he wouldnt say the word Redskins on TV. He called them Washington when using to public address system to enforce penalties during games. In 2006 he stopped doing Redskins games altogether. He never called attention to it. He never publicly explained his aversion to the use of the term. He just explained his position to the NFL and, to their credit, the league accommodated him. He recently retired and this is JUST coming to light. Some of his closest friends and fellow referees knew of his stance but thats it! I think hes one of the most awesomest human beings ever!!!!
