I have a new album out called coastguard advisory service. tudorbeats.co.uk/release/coastguard-advisory-service. I have been doing a track-by-track over the last few weeks of each of the tracks on the album. Today I am going to be covering Newcastle 1994. Newcastle 1994. ________________ This was the first track that I wrote for the album and seemed to set the tone and vibe for the rest of the album. A few people have asked me about the title. Well, I spent a couple of months in Newcastle in summer 1994 doing a work placement with my university course. There were lots of other students from all around Europe and the UK taking part, some from France, Belgium, Germany and Ireland. It was definitely a very sociable time, we all worked hard and played hard too. I felt that there was a bit of an industrial vibe about Newcastle with the bridges and stuff, and also there was something lushly futuristic about it. It was a much bigger city than Sheffield which I was living in at the time. And for me the main theme of the track which seems to sum up the vibe of those times totally are the chords that come in about a minute or so in to the tune…. At the time I was listening to a lot of FSOL and Vangelis bladerunner soundtrack and I think I mentally morphed my surroundings into this kind of metropolis. But I felt that those chords really summed up the vibe totally of those times and I was thrilled when I found them. Newcastle 194 was a harder track to mix than a lot because there are so many different layers in it. It was basically a case of trying to make sure that they all had their own space in the mix and that the whole thing was one environment. But there are quite a lot of whooshy type percussion sounds and clankings to help reinforce the industrial setting. I think that what ties this one in to the other album tracks is the very specific references to a time and place and a feeling.
