I have a patient that had both legs amputated above the knee - TopicsExpress

I have a patient that had both legs amputated above the knee because of diabetes and smoking. He moves on a wheelchair pushed by his wife - not an easy task since he is morbidly obese due to lack of exercise. He can’t use his hands or arms because of severe crippling arthritis. His skin oozes acid uric crystals due to congenital hyperuricemia. He had cardiac stents implanted in the past due to severe coronary artery disease. Even though life has not been kind to him, in 15 years of being my patient I have never heard him complain. When he comes to see me every year his smile lightens up the room. He is an extremely warm person, always kind to me or my staff. When I carefully and softly shake his hand in order not to hurt him because of his arthritis he apologizes for not being able to stand up to greet me. My patient has had it wrong all these years. He is the one who makes me feel better instead of the other way around…
