I have a question. I am a very recent convert from the Coptic Orthodox Church to the Melkite Church. Well, actually converting is the wrong word but you know what I mean. What I have been discussing with alot of Latin catholics and even eastern catholics is the teaching of days of obligation and sunday obligation. As an Eastern Catholic I cringe everytime I hear the word obligation. The Orthodox Church does not blieve in a sunday obligation, its a desire to pray whenever we can, on our journey of theosis. when I was orthodox, Coptic Orthodox in this case, the rule was if you miss more then 40 days without communion you are outside the Church and must confess before recieving. I believe it is important as Eastern Catholics to maintain our unique theology whilst in communion with Rome. But I see the Days of obligation in the Eastern Canon law as, quite frankly, a latinization and not authentic eastern tradition. What are peoples thoughts?
