I have a question: (My phone cannot capture birds far across a pond so my words are my camera.) I was sitting on the dock having a stare down with a snapping turtle the.other day. I became aware of crows fussing greatly, behind me in the pasture. I knew it had to.be a predator, so.I stood up to.peek.over the bushes, expecting to see a fox or coyote, when a huge white bird flew over my head, across the pond and settled atop a very tall pine tree. Definitely a prey bird. Huge! But all white? White head white wings white belly. A touch of darkness perhaps on back.or edge of wing. Not a snowy owl. It visited a few more days, and then I noticed a pair flying over here for about two days. Couldnt for the life of me identify! Closest I could gather was that it was an osprey, but too.much white.! A friend suggested a gyr hawk. Never ever heard of one. Looked it up and its a dead ringer. But here in eastern N.Y.? Now someones mylar balloons have sailed in, got snagged in another tall tree and are shiny and flapping around noisily theyve scared off everthing! Wah !! I guess Ill never get a picture . So peeps, has anyone else seen one of these hawks here??? Thought they were from the arctic. Any thoughts or comments? Thx.
