I have a question ... Why, in general terms, when critique is leveled against law enforcement does there seem to be a constant interjection that there are also “good” police officers? Why has it become almost de rigueur for people to include an acknowledgement of the existence of “good” ones during a discussion of bad ones? Why, just as an example, do we seem at ease discussing bad physicians without manifesting the same level of need to point out that there are good ones? Does the fact that the police represent “authority” figures play a role and we, as a society, have and want to nurture a respect for authority? Is it related to a long tradition of viewing the police as our “friend” and that image is hard to shake? Is it that people fear that criticism could lead to an abolition of police in some way?
