I have a question for all those with chickens: My husband and I have some chickens that free range our entire back yard. At first, they WERE supposed to be merely livestock - but they quickly became more like pets to us. Both of us adore them, and we plan to get a few more. That being said, we do live in an area with hawks, racoons, and other dogs, and have had a few close calls. Im aware having any dog around chickens is risky - especially at first - but I feel getting a LGD to help us keep watch over them would be good. We only have an acre of property, so the dog would also be a companion and not just a guardian. Im thinking of a kuvasz, but understandably my husband is concerned about getting any type of big dog, especially one with guarding tendencies. What have you found works best with training a dog around chickens? Are there any resources you would recommend? Anything to stay away from? Any other recommendations? Id appreciate any information - itll still be a year or two before we seriously can even consider a dog (hopefully our chickens will last...), and Id like to have a good idea of what to expect or look for in one.
