I have a question for film producers. What do you look for in a directors reel? Back when I was producing and looking to hire directors I wanted to see completed scenes or sequences on a directors reel so I could get a feel for their style, abilities and sensibilities and gauge whether or not they could tell a cohesive story. But I would get mostly montages, which I found to be completely frustrating. But lately Ive seen several montage-y directors reels that are pretty impressive. But it still begs the question: what are producers looking for when hiring? Im starting to think that maybe directors could have two reels: a SHOW reel for general purposes/publicity and promotion and a DEMO reel that contains actual scenes/sequences to send out when being considered for hire for specific projects. Perhaps the perfect reel opens with a 15-45 second montage to show the body of work/cool shots/name talent, etc, then several select scenes/sequences after that? And if thats the case, how long should a directors reel be? Producer thoughts?
