I have a question for the members of this group, as I see very often that people ask about the origins of their surnames. Do you consider surname being significant part of an ethnicity, ethnic identity etc.? I have a surname that means literally Rusyn in Rusyn language, and from mother side (before she got married :)) we had Polish surname, as grand-grandfather was Polish. However, I consider myself Slovak with Rusyn and Polish roots. How much does it matter to you, knowing where this surname came from / what geographical areas this surname occurs in etc.? Can you really track ones ancestry according to the surname only? In the village my father came from there are 5 various families with our surname... Thank you.
